But first, the logistics!
Before we get into the fabulous wineries of Middleburg, Virginia, let’s chat logistics. Here are some helpful things to know in advance:

How to Get There

Middleburg is about an hour’s drive west of Washington, DC.
If you’re flying into the DC area, the closest airport is Washington Dulles International. Middleburg is about a 30-40 minute drive from Dulles.
Public transportation isn’t available in Middleburg and Uber/Lyfts are scarce, so don’t plan on relying on these options to get around.
You’ll either need a car of your own or will need to arrange transportation in advance. Some transportation options include:
- If you’re staying at a hotel, check if your hotel can arrange transportation to and from the wineries.
- Book a wine tour like this one with transportation included.
- Arrange for your own driver. You can check out “personal driver” and “private driver” reviews on Yelp to find a good driver near Middelburg.

Where to Stay

Middleburg has three primary options for accommodations, all of which are fairly pricey but offer fantastic experiences:
- Red Fox Inn & Tavern: The Red Fox Inn & Tavern is a historic inn that was frequented by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. It is located in downtown Middleburg, making it easy to walk to local restaurants and shops. Even if you don’t stay here, be sure to dine at the spectacular restaurant.
- Goodstone Inn & Restaurant: The Goodstone Inn & Restaurant offers guest rooms in six different buildings, from stately manor houses to adorable cottages. The buildings are spread across a beautiful 265-acre estate with rolling hills, farmland, and forest.
- Salamander Resort & Spa: The Salamander Resort & Spa opened in 2013 as a luxury getaway. It offers an incredible variety of activities, from equestrian programs to zip lining and axe throwing to art classes. Plus, the resort will provide transportation to and from local attractions, including the wineries below.
If you’re looking for less pricey accommodations, you’ll need to stay about 30 minutes away in Leesburg, Virginia (which can feel like a long drive at the end of the day). More reasonably priced options in Leesburg include the Hampton Inn & Suites and the Homewood Suites by Hilton.

Stop the Hunger

You’ll notice that some of the wineries below don’t serve food. But not to worry, these wineries allow you to bring outside food!
There’s a Safeway grocery store in downtown Middleburg where you can pick up essentials.
Alternatively, you could order a to-go lunch to bring with you to the wineries from one of the wonderful restaurants like King Street Oyster Bar or Red Horse Tavern.

What to Drink

When you arrive at the wineries, a tasting is a great way to experience the different varietals each winery has to offer.
However, if you prefer to just get a single glass or bottle, you can’t go wrong with a Viognier or Cabernet Franc. Virginia wine country has become particularly adept at growing and developing these varietals.
And so, without further ado, the Middleburg, Virginia wineries!

Greenhill Winery & Vineyards

When I first pulled into the driveway leading up to Greenhill Vineyards, I had to pull over and take a picture.
The winery is perfectly framed by mountains, vineyards, and a gorgeous sycamore tree.
After you park and walk around the building, you’ll find a porch for sipping wine. The sweeping lawn next to the porch offers picnic tables, benches, and fire pits for chilly afternoons. It’s absolutely amazing – and that’s even before you taste the wine!
Be sure to get a cheese and charcuterie platter to accompany your wine tasting. If there’s a seasonal platter, you need to get that. I’m still daydreaming about the autumnal platter I got there.
The details:
- Age Restrictions: The property is 21+ (no infants or children).
- Pets: Pet-friendly.
- Reservation Requirements: Reservations required for parties of 6+.
- Parking: Paved driveway and parking lot.
- Food: Cheese and charcuterie platters are available for purchase. Outside food is permitted in the outdoor areas.

Cana Vineyards & Winery

If you’re looking for an incredible view, Cana Vineyards is your go-to spot.
The winery is located at the top of the hill, allowing you to see incredible, sloping valleys of grapevines. The valleys then slope upwards to give you a great view of flowering trees in the spring and incredible fall foliage in the fall.
The winery has multiple buildings, gazebos, and outdoor spaces to enjoy. Adirondack chairs and fire pits dot the lawn, while multi-level porches provide bird’s eye views of the surrounding area.
Cana Vineyards gets extremely busy on nice weather Saturdays. If you want to avoid the crowds, try visiting on another day (although the crowds do give it a festive air!).
The details:
- Age Restrictions: Infants and children are welcome (there are some 21+ only spots on the property that the greeter can point out to you when you arrive).
- Pets: Pet-friendly.
- Reservation Requirements: Reservations required for parties of 8+.
- Parking: A gravel parking lot with overflow parking on the grass (the grass can get a little slippery).
- Food: Outside food is permitted.

Chrysalis Vineyards

Chrysalis Vineyards is located on the top of a hill, overlooking a scenic valley. A gorgeous trellis spans the outdoor seating area, providing shade and beautiful scenery.
The winery is located quite a ways back from the main road on a gravel road. While the gravel road is fairly smooth, there are some potholes to watch for along the drive.
But then the winery will appear to you on the top of the hill and the drive will have been all worth it!
As you’re nearing the winery, be sure to watch along the side of the hill. There’s a very cool-looking cellar door beneath the vineyard. A great place for photo ops.
The details:
- Age Restrictions: Infants and children are welcome (there are some 21+ only spots on the property that the greeter can point out to you when you arrive).
- Pets: Pet-friendly in the outdoor spaces; pets are not allowed indoors.
- Reservation Requirements: Parties of 9+ must call ahead to 540-687-8222, extension 0.
- Parking: Gravel driveway and parking lot.
- Food: Food is served at the winery. No outside food is permitted.

Boxwood Winery

Boxwood Winery is the closet winery to downtown Middleburg. It only takes about 5 minutes to drive from downtown Middleburg to the winery.
If you love French wines, be sure to visit Boxwood Winery. The winery specializes in making wines in the French Bordeaux tradition.
One of my favorite parts about the Boxwood Winery is that you can leisurely walk through the vineyard. While many other wineries fence off their vineyards entirely, Boxwood allows you to stroll (and take pictures!) in its vineyard. You’ll even find a gazebo among the vines.
The details:
- Age Restrictions: The property is 21+ (no infants or children).
- Pets: Pets are not permitted.
- Reservation Requirements: Reservations required for parties of 6+.
- Parking: Paved driveway and gravel/grass parking lot.
- Food: Light fare options (like cheese, charcuterie, hummus, and sandwich platters) are available for purchase. Outside food is permitted in small, pre-packaged quantities. The winery does not permit hot food, platters, or coolers.

50 West Vineyards

50 West Vineyards has a wonderful, laid-back vibe.
If you want to go someplace to relax and soak up good, live music, then 50 West Vineyards is the place for you.
To get the best view, walk around to the side of the house that borders the vineyard. There you’ll see a fantastic view of the grapevines sloping down into the valley, with beautiful trees sloping back up the hills on the other side.
The details:
- Age Restrictions: Infants and children are welcome.
- Pets: Pet-friendly.
- Reservation Requirements: Parties of 8+ must make reservations by emailing carlos@50westvineyards.com.
